UAE President Sheikh Khalifa passes away

DUBAI: United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan passed away at age of 73 on Friday. Ministry of Presidential Affairs announced official mourning and flags at half-mast for a period of 40 days, starting Friday. Work will also be suspended in ministries, departments, federal and local institutions and private sector for three days. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan who was born in 1948 came to power in 2004 in richest emirate Abu Dhabi and became head of state.  Mohammed bin Zayed has been de facto ruler of US-allied UAE, particularly after Khalifa suffered a stroke in 2014, following which he has rarely been seen in public.

Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa offered his condolences over demise of President of UAE Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan. “Pakistan has lost a great friend. May Allah Almighty bless his soul and give strength to bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss,” Army Chief said.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said “UAE has lost a visionary leader and Pakistan a great friend. We send our heartfelt condolences and sympathies to government and people of UAE. May Allah rest his soul in peace” he tweeted. Meanwhile, FM Bilawal Bhutto  in his Tweet wrote, “Heartfelt and deepest condolence on demise of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE. May Allah Almighty rest his soul in eternal peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with Royal family and people of UAE.”
