‘Water supply to Karachi at halt as 72-inch pipeline bursts’

THATTA: Water supply to Karachi has been suspended after 72-inch diameter pipeline at Dhabeji pumping station burst. According to Karachi Water and Sewerage Board 72-inch pipeline at Dhabeji burst following power breakdown due to which four pumps were shut down and 530 million gallons of water supply to port city was suspended.
In statement, Chief Engineer KWSB said that pipeline maintenance work has been started on an emergency basis and the pipeline will be repaired within 24 hours. He said that water supply to metropolis is continuing through alternative lines.
Main sources of water for Karachi are Keenjhar Lake and Hub Dam from which water is pumped through three main bulk pumping stations located at Dhabeji, Gharo and Hub. Karachi gets 100 million gallons of water daily from Dam.
Hub Dam, located 56 km from Karachi with total capacity of 339 feet is extended to 24,300 acres with gross storage capacity of 8,57,000 acre-feet water.
