Tripartite stakeholders must protect human rights: Nilofar Bakhtiar

KARACHI: Nilofar Bakhtiar Chairperson of National Commission on Status of Women said that Protect, Respect and Remedy Framework provided by UN Guiding Principles outlines roadmap as to how State should protect human rights in context of business activity. These principles obligate stakeholders including government employers and workers to meet international obligations under core UN Human Right treatise and core ILO Conventions to which Pakistan is party.
Talking at ‘National Conference on Business and Human Rights’ organized by UN Global Compact Network Pakistan (UN-GCNP) and Employers Federation of Pakistan (EFP) Bakhtiar added, “National Commission has task of conducting national study to determine sectors in which significant gender disparity is prevalent and utilise findings of study to assess and develop policy regarding mandatory reservation of quotas for women in different sectors”, she added.
Jawed Sibghatullah Mahar Secretary Human Rights Department government of Sindh disclosed that “Draft Provincial Action Plan on Business and Human Rights has been formulated by Human Rights Department of government. Actions stipulated by Provincial Action plan include survey mapping exercise for number of industries, SMEs in supply and value chain for export-oriented goods, conducting human rights impact assessment in value chain of exports industry, review and updating of existing labor laws to bring them in line with ILO Conventions and creating awareness, capacity building and institutional development.
