KARACHI: Government decided to include transgenders in Benazir Kafalat programme for first time. This decision was made by Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) board under Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety and BISP Chairperson Shazia Marri.

“Transgenders are also part of society like us and it is duty of government to take care of them,” Shazia Marri said in a video message. She said that transgenders had to first update their gender in CNIC from NADRA in order to be eligible for this programme. She said transgenders after updating their CNIC from NADRA can register themselves in BISP tehsil offices. On successful registration, applicant transgender will get payment message from 8171 number and will get Rs 7,000 per quarter, she added.

During meeting, board members urged NADRA to simplify a system for updating CNICs of transgender community. Marri termed it landmark achievement of government and urged members of Board of Directors to mobilise marginalised community so that maximum number of transgender persons could benefit from policy.
