Transgender community must be included in mainstream: Shazia Marri

Karachi: Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme Shazia Marri said that financial issues, awareness among masses and acceptance in society top list of issues being faced by vulnerable and marginalized segment, particularly transgender community.
Addressing via zoom-link, conference arranged by Sustainable Development Policy Institute titled ‘Financial Inclusion among Transgender Community in Pakistan’ Marri lauded socio-economic contribution of Sustainable Development Policy Institute in upbringing this marginalised and vulnerable society of Pakistan. She commended role played by Bindiya Rana and Reem Sharif in highlighting issues being faced by transgender community.
She encouraged Dr Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Executive Director SDPI to arrange more seminars on topic in order to highlight issue. She said, it is our duty to sensitise people about hardships being faced by transgender community.
They have come long way in their struggle, she continued. She, however, noted with concern that there are still areas in Pakistan where atrocities are being meted out to transgender community. She expressed her utmost desire to see transgender community’s inclusion in mainstream.
Shazia Marri apprised participants that BISP has started financial assistance of transgender through cash disbursement. She highlighted Hybrid Social Protection Scheme of BISP and said that BISP has proved itself as successful model in uplifting socio-economic conditions of women in Pakistan.
