Tens of thousands attend President Raisi’s funeral in Tehran

TEHRAN: Funeral prayer for Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and their entourage were offered in Tehran.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led prayer for Raisi and his companions, as tens of thousands of Iranians flocked to streets of Tehran to join funeral procession.
In centre of city, people holding portraits of Raisi gathered in and around University of Tehran, where Khamenei led prayer. In capital, huge banners went up hailing late President as “Martyr of service”, while others bade “Farewell to servant of disadvantaged”.
Processions, which was being attended by foreign dignitaries, planned to set off from University and head to vast Enghelab Square in city centre, according to state media.
From Tehran, bodies will be moved to South Khorasan province before being transferred to Raisi’s home city of Mashhad in northeast, where he will be buried today after funeral rites at Imam Reza shrine.
