Tarar says SC Bill to become law on Apr 20

ISLAMABAD: Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar announced that Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill, 2023 which aims to curtail Chief Justice’s powers to take suo motu notice in an individual capacity will become law on April 20.
Government had on April 10 gotten SC bill passed in joint session of Parliament amid strong protest from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf after President Arif Alvi had returned bill seeking to curtail CJP’s suo motu powers. Bill was again put forth before President for his assent.Advertisement: 25:50 Under Constitution, if head of state does not give his approval within 10 days, it would be deemed to have been given.
However, an eight-member larger bench of SC on April 13 had ordered that even if SC bill 2023 received assent of President, it would not be acted upon in any manner till further order. “It will be violation of Constitution if amount Rs 21 billion is allocated without approval of National Assembly,” he added.
