Karachi: Sugar price spiked to record high of Rs 220 per kilogram in retail markets of Balochistan after Karachi where commodity is being sold at Rs 230-240 per kilogram.

Sugar that was earlier being sold at Rs 200 suddenly recorded Rs 20 per kg rise in Balochistan to reach an all-time record high of Rs 220 per kilogram.

Commodity's wholesale price is Rs 210 per kg in province, while 50-kg sack has reached Rs 10,500, market sources said. According to dealers, price of commodity increased after supply of sugar got suspended as vehicles got stuck on national highways after suspension of permits. Sudden rise in sugar prices has added to misery of consumers who are already bearing brunt of inflation. Earlier sources claimed that Ministry of Commerce and Industries ruled out shortage of sugar in Pakistan. Clarification came after sources claimed that Pakistan is seeking to import sugar from Brazil.

Sources within Ministry said Pakistan has sufficient stock of sugar more than 2 million metric tonnes, which is sufficient for country's use until December.
