Sugar price declines amid crackdown on profiteers, smugglers

KARACHI: After massive crackdown on profiteers, hoarders and smugglers, sugar price in Karachi’s wholesale market has declined by Rs 3 to Rs 145 per kg, according to report. Price of 50 kg sugar bag has decreased by Rs 100 to Rs 7,250. People would get more relief in sugar prices as countrywide crackdown is underway against smuggling of sugr, urea and other commodities on orders of caretaker government.
On September 18, Rangers seized 140,000 bags of sugar worth over Rs 1 billion on Hub River Road area in Baldia Town. It was set to be smuggled to Afghanistan.
On September 24, Shikarpur police during an action on National Highway seized 26 trucks loaded with sugar and urea. Sugar and urea was being smuggled to Afghanistan.
In February, Mochko police during checking of passenger coach found 150 bags of urea that were being smuggled to Afghanistan via Balochistan. In raid in Quetta, Customs department seized 300 bags of urea and sweet supari (betel nuts) worth Rs 60 million during search of container and trailer at Lakpas chckpost of Customs in Quetta.
