Stakeholders seek effective implementation of media safety laws

KARACHI: Stakeholders emphasised importance of effective implementation of Sindh Protection of Journalists and Media Practitioners Act, 2021 and its Commission in day-long workshop and seminar, organised by Pakistan Press Foundation.
In collaboration with United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation was held at local hotel on occasion of International Women’s Day and focussed on challenges faced by women in media.
Workshop, facilitated by journalist and advocate Lala Hassan, focussed on guiding women journalists on effective use of provincial media safety law. It began with an understanding of threats media faces, in particular, challenges faced by women in media including physical and digital threats that women encounter.
Participants then discussed media safety law and Sindh Commission for Protection of Journalists and Other Media Practitioners (CJMP) and went through practical exercises on filing complaint.
Workshop was followed by seminar, attended by different stakeholder groups including journalists, members of Commission, unions, civil society, legal representatives and police.
Moment of silence was observed for Justice (retired) Rasheed A. Razvi, former Chairperson of Commission, who passed away on February 3.
Senior journalist and member of Commission, Professor Dr. Tauseef Ahmed Khan shared Justice (retired) Nazar Akbar had been appointed as new Chairperson. He added that within Commission, an executive committee had also been established to take up complaints on holidays.
