KARACHI: Sindh government suggested to hold Local Government (LG) polls in Karachi in two phases. “Proposal will be forwarded to Election Commission to seek its opinion over matter”, sources said. “Government has given this proposal owing to deployment of police contingents in flood-hit areas,” sources said.

“Available police personnel will be deployed for first phase of LB election and it will later be posted for second stage of election,” according to government proposal. “Holding election in two phases will make it convenient for government,” provincial government said in its suggestion to electoral body.

Election Commission of Pakistan decided that LB elections in Karachi and by-polls for national and provincial assemblies will take place on their scheduled dates. ECP previously announced October 23 as date for LG elections in Karachi division and October 16 as date for by-elections in nine National Assembly and three provincial assembly constituencies across country. Second phase of LG elections in Sindh was originally scheduled to take place on July 24. However, it was postponed twice due to unprecedented rains and flooding.
