Sindh govt, WB agree to launch Rs110bn housing project for flood victims

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah with assistance of World Bank decided to launch a Rs 110 billion housing project for flood-affected people for which a special unit would be established under chief secretary. This emerged in a meeting between Chief Minister and World Bank Country Director Najy Benhassine who attended meeting through video link from Islamabad.
Dr. Azra Pechuho, Manzoor Wassan, Nasir Shah Jam Khan Shoro, Zia Abbas Shah, Rasool Bux Chandio, Murtaza Wahab, Chief Secretary Sohail Rajput, Chairman P&D Hassan Naqvi and concerned secretaries attended meeting. World Bank team who attended meeting in person include Programme Leader Abedalrazaq Khalif, senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist Elif Ayhan, Bilal Khalid, Kamran Akbar, Yunziyi Lag and Farah Yamin.
CM said that he has already deputed teams to clear water from flooded towns and villages. “Dewatering process is in progress and hopefully within one and half months it would be evacuated,” he said. CM said that he would start construction of houses for affected people once water is disposed of.
Chief Executive Officer of company with support of public and private sector would start construction of houses for which survey is in progress. World Bank committed Rs 6 billion for project and Chief Minister said he would arrange remaining amount of Rs 7 billion from other sources.Winter season was over head, therefore we have to make housing arrangements for people. He urged World Bank to finance housing project. He and World Bank Country Director after thorough discussions and deliberations decided to launch project for Rs 110 billion for which a company would be established under control of chief secretary.
