Sindh govt nods setting up commission for protection of journalists, media practitioners

Karachi: Sindh government has announced establishment of a commission for protection of journalists and other media practitioners. Spokesperson of Sindh government Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui through a social media website sharing message said that Sindh Cabinet has approved establishment of a commission for protection of journalists and other media practitioners.
For protection of journalists and other media practitioners, it submitted for approval draft for setting up a 14-member commission headed by retired Justice Rashid A. Rizvi with four non-official members including Secretary Information, Secretary Home, Secretary Law and Secretary and nine non-official members including Faheem Siddiqui of KUJ, Qazi Asad Abid of APNS, Dr. Jabbar Khattak from CPNE, Athar Qazi from PBA, Ayaz Tonio from Sindh Bar Council, Professor Tauseef Khan from HRCP, MPA Shazia Umar, Syeda Marvi Rashidi and Ghulam Fariduddin from APNE.
Cabinet approved establishment of commission. It should be noted that in early February of this year, then Sindh Information Minister Saeed Ghani assured government would form a commission to ensure protection of media persons, such as Sindh Protection of Journalists and others. Media Practitioners Act 2021 was enacted. This Bill for Protection of Journalists was unanimously passed by Sindh Assembly in May 2021 with aim of promoting, independence, impartiality, protection and freedom of expression.
