Sindh govt launches massive crackdown against profiteers, hoarders

KARACHI: Sindh government launched drive to control prices of food items and decided to take strict action against profiteers during Ramadhan. Chief Secretary Sindh Dr Muhammad Sohail Rajput presided over price control meeting attended by all commissioners of province.

Rajput directed meeting participants to penalise profiteers with heavy fines and take action according to new ordinance. According to new ordinance, if the shopkeeper is found guilty of profiteering against government rates, commissioner will fine him minimum of Rs 100,000 and all items in shop will be sold at government rates for next 30 days.

Chief Secretary directed officers of Department of Agriculture and Labour to work under Deputy Commissioner during Ramadhan and instructed all Divisional Commissioners to submit reports on daily basis.

On his direction commissioners took action against 170 shopkeepers in all districts of Karachi, sealing three shops and more than Rs 181,000 fined over profiteering and not displaying government’s official rate list. Commissioner Karachi issued control room numbers (02199203443, 02199205645) for citizens to lodge complaints.
