Sindh excuses itself from holding LG polls in reply to ECP

KARACHI: Sindh government has excused itself from holding Local Government (LG) polls for three months in its reply to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Sindh government sent a letter to ECP regarding organisation of LG elections in province. Letter stated that Sindh authorities are unable to organise LG polls for at least three months.

It stated that duty of LG elections could not be performed due to unavailability of required police force in Sindh. According to Karachi police department, 37,000 police officials are required for security duties during LG polls.

Provincial authorities said that 17,000 cops could not leave flood-hit districts, whereas 5,000 Sindh police officials were sent to Islamabad on request of interior ministry. In another development, Election Commission of Pakistan summoned an important meeting todayto decide fate of LG elections in Karachi.

Chief Election Commissioner, ECP members and Sindh government representatives including provincial secretary and other high-ups attended meeting. Sources told that meeting will decide on holding LG polls or not in seven districts of port city. Sindh government representatives will brief participants of meeting, sources added.
