Sindh could be declared ‘calamity-hit’ after heavy downpours: CM Murad

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said entire province could be declared ‘calamity-hit’ after torrential downpours. At a press conference at Shahbaz Hall of Shahbaz Building in Hyderabad, he apprised that entire province had received 400 percent more rainfall this year as compared to average annual downpours during monsoon season in recent years.
He said after undertaking a day-long visit to several districts of Hyderabad division, he had reached to conclusion that ongoing rains were most torrential in province’s history. He admitted that rainfall had affected hundreds of thousands of people across province, also causing devastation of crops, houses and livestock.
“Entire province may have to be declared as calamity hit,” he regretted. Meanwhile, announcing relief package, CM Sindh said provincial government would provide financial support worth of Rs 25,000 per household to affected people, adding that amount would be released in coming two weeks. “Government will provide relief to affected people and we are assessing total losses as well,” he told. CM said government was employing all resources to drain out rainwater from flooded rural and urban areas.
