Sindh Cabinet approves Rs5mln for victims of Machhar Colony mob lynching

KARACHI: Sindh Cabinet approved Rs 5 million in compensation for two telecom company workers who lost their lives in a mob attack in Machhar Colony. An angry mob last Friday killed two men Aimen Javed of Thatta and Ishaq Maher of Naushehroferoze following rumours that they were there to abduct children. However, they were visiting area to “check signals of mobile tower”, Sindh Inspector-General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon told Cabinet in his briefing. IG informed Cabinet that 15 people identified in footage of incident have been arrested.
In response, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said such incidents could not be ignored and killers will have to face law, while also noting that public confidence in police had deteriorated. “Incident of Machhar Colony and others in which mob kills culprits or [suspected] culprits was a question mark of public confidence in our police, therefore, we have to revisit laws to discourage mob justice system and police have to develop public confidence in them.”
Cabinet, while approving Rs 5 million compensation for each of victims also formed a Cabinet committee to discuss issue and give its recommendations. Sindh Energy Minister Imtiaz Shaikh, Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab, Special Assistant to Sindh CM for Rehabilitation of Special Children Sadiq Ali Memon, IGP Memon and Home Secretary Dr Saeed Ahmed Mangnejo are members. The force, if formed, will be imparted relevant training and equipped with required equipment and arms.
