KARACHI: Sindh Cabinet approved delaying Local Government elections in Karachi Division for another 90 days. It was revealed in a letter from LG to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Move comes a day after Sindh High Court (SHC) censured ECP for sitting on LB elections in Karachi and Hyderabad, warning them against further delay. Proposal for delaying elections was given go-ahead through a circulation summary.  Sindh Cabinet took this action by invoking Sindh Local Government Act, 2013.

SHC voiced displeasure over LG election holdup during hearing of petitions submitted by PTI and JI. A two-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Sindh High Court Justice Ahmed Ali M Shaikh took up case. During hearing, Justice Yousaf Ali questioned ECP counsel why LG elections were being delayed repeatedly.

CJ Shaikh remarked that it was ECP’s responsibility to hold elections.  PTI and JI had moved SHC in August soon after ECP, for a second time, shelved LG polls scheduled to be held in Karachi and Hyderabad Divisions on August 28.
