KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) extended restraining order to Election Commission from decision against Asad Umar and others in contempt case. A bench of High Court heard petition of PTI leader Asad Umar against EC contempt case. “Asad Umar appeared before court and submitted his reply over ECP contempt notice,” Umar’s counsel told bench.
“Election Commission rejected reply to notice and now going to frame charges against him and others,” counsel said. Bench extended its restraining order against ECP’s decision on matter and adjourned further hearing until October 31. Recently ECP filed constitutional petition with Supreme Court to transfer all its contempt cases against PTI leaders from different high courts to a single one.
Commission argued that it had issued contempt notices to PTI Chairman Imran Khan as well as party leaders Asad Umar, Fawad Chaudhry in August and September month. However, these notices were challenged in high courts. Umar, on other hand challenged it before Sindh High Court. Another one challenged it in Islamabad High Court. Election Commission argued that instead of wasting time and unnecessarily burdening national exchequer, prudent move was to transfer all these cases to a single high court.
