KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) ordered Election Commission (ECP) to announce new schedule for Local Government (LG) polls in Karachi and Hyderabad within 15 days and to hold elections in 2 months. SHC announced reserved decision on November 14 on pleas submitted by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) against delay in LG elections.
Both political parties submitted petitions against delay in polls and demanded verdict from court for immediate elections in Karachi and Hyderabad. On other hand, Sindh government had been delaying elections owing to unavailability of police force being deployed in flood-affected areas. In hearing, SHC ordered, “Sindh government should provide all facilities including security to Election Commission.” Court rejected plea submitted by Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan to delay elections till amendments in Local Government Law.
