London: In a nail-biting finish, West Indies clinched a 3-2 win over England in the Twenty20 series, guided by Shai Hope’s unbeaten 43. Shai's powerful six over extra-cover in the final over sealed the deal in a tense match. The win marked West Indies' third consecutive T20 series victory in 2023, a major boost as they prepare to host the World Cup for the shortest format in June. However, it was a disappointing finish for England, led by Jos Buttler, who also lost the 50-over series in the Caribbean 2-1.
The decider was a low-scoring affair compared to earlier high-scoring clashes. England struggled, bowled out for 132, while West Indies capitalised on favourable bowling conditions. Left-arm spinners Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein starred, with Motie claiming three crucial wickets for 24 runs and Hosein contributing two wickets for 20 runs. England's innings witnessed key dismissals, including Buttler, Jacks, and Phil Salt, who had been in impressive form earlier. Despite contributions from Liam Livingston and Moeen Ali, England fell short and were bowled out with three balls remaining. In response, West Indies faced early setbacks with Brandon King and Nichola Pooran's dismissals. However, a vital partnership between Sherfane Rutherford and Hope stabilized the innings. Late pressure from England, thanks to Rashid and Topley's dismissals, intensified the game.
Hope emerged as the anchor, delivering a calculated knock amidst falling wickets around him. West Indies skipper Rovman Powell praised Hope's pivotal role in navigating a challenging pitch. England's Buttler admitted their struggle to adapt to the conditions, emphasizing the need for a higher total to pressure the opposition.
