Senate parliamentary committee calls for holding election within 90 days

ISLAMABAD: Senate Parliamentary Committee calling for holding general election within constitutional period of 90 days has recommended Election Commission (EC) to shorten process of delimitation of constituencies.

Committee met here under Chairman Senator Taj Muhammad in Parliament house. Meeting was attended by members of committee, secretary parliamentary affairs, secretary EC, Special secretary, DG IT and other officers.

Chairman committee said as per Constitution it is must that general election should be held within 90 days of dissolution of assembly.

For what reason the constitutional requirement is not being met.  Secretary EC said EC was prepared to hold election as per Constitution. But population census was accepted before end of government. Delimitation of constituencies were must under constitutional obligation. After making consultation with legal experts for three days decision was taken for conducting delimitation.  Committee has also expressed its reservation on using statistical department tablet.

Senator Kamaran Murtaza said election schedule is not being announced by EC which is giving rise to doubts.
