Senate approves bill on MPs’ disqualification, clipping President’s powers

ISLAMABAD: Senate approved bill which fixes period of disqualification of parliamentarian under Article 62 (1) (f) of Constitution. Bill states that disqualification shall not exceed five years if punishment is not specified in Constitution. It states convict would be eligible to become Member of Parliament after completion of punishment.
Another bill proposing amendment to Section 232 of Election Act, which is related to disqualification of lawmakers, was also tabled in upper house of Parliament. It states eligibility criteria, disqualification process and punishment should be in line with Article 62 and 63 of Constitution. Bill further proposes that person convicted by Supreme Court and high court would be disqualified for five years from date of verdict.
