SCO Summit: Members sign agreements, endorse China as 2024-25 chair

Islamabad: During summit, eight significant agreements were signed, focusing on issues like SCO’s budget, operations of its secretariat and regional counterterrorism efforts.
These agreements signed highlight organisation’s commitment to cooperation in areas such as security, trade and economic development.
Summit, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also saw member states reaffirm their dedication to promoting regional peace, political stability and socio-economic cooperation.
In addition, leaders recognised need for enhanced cooperation in science, technology, digital economy and information security.
Summit participants also supported UN General Assembly resolutions aimed at promoting global peace and development. 23rd Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit kicked off in Islamabad earlier during day, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif delivering keynote address at Jinnah Convention Centre.
Among key attendees were Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and leaders from Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Iran. India was represented by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, while Mongolia participated as an observer, represented by its Prime Minister. Discussions centred on critical regional issues, including trade, security and cooperation among SCO member states.
These conversations set stage for official declaration released after summit, which confirmed China’s endorsement as new chair for 2024-25 term.
During separate meetings on sidelines of SCO-CHG, Shehbaz called for sustained exchanges between SCO member states to realise potential of bilateral cooperation in diverse fields, according to press release issued by Prime Minister’s Office.
PM in his meeting with Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko, discussed potential cooperation in areas of trade, investment, agricultural machinery and joint production of tractors.
In meeting with Rasulzoda, Shehbaz stressed importance of enhancing bilateral collaboration across all spheres of shared interest, including trade, investment, energy and regional connectivity.
