ISLAMABAD: PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto said historic verdict passed by Supreme Court on Bhutto reference would help Pakistan progress on all fronts, including democratic system and judiciary.
History is set to be corrected after 44 years, PPP chairman remarked, as he pointed to fact that Bhutto was hanged decades ago on April 4, 1979 and his family as well as party have been describing move as judicial murder since then.
Talking to reporters after nine-member bench shared its verdict, Bilawal-grandson of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who was first elected Prime Minister of Pakistan said court had accepted that Bhutto didn’t get fair trial.
He noted that it was difficult for ordinary people to trust judicial system when popular leader like Bhutto couldn’t get justice. Bilawal, during short interaction with media persons, thanked amicus curiae appointed by court and lawyers who presented their opinion and argued case.
Bhutto was arrested on charges of conspiring to murder political opponent two months after his ouster from office and declared guilty in 1978 by Lahore High Court. His appeal in Supreme Court was then dismissed with 4-3 verdict in February 1979.
