ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court reserved its opinion regarding presidential reference on Reko Diq mining case. A five-member larger bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial completed hearing on matter. Apex court stated that it will announce its judgment next week.
On advice of Prime Minister, President filed reference in SC under Article 186 of Constitution, requesting apex court to evaluate two key questions. President requested apex court to decide “whether earlier judgment of SC reported as Maulvi Abdul Haque Baloch versus Federation of Pakistan, laws or public policy prevent government of Pakistan and government of Balochistan from entering into Reko Diq agreements or affect their validity.” Second question posed by President is “if enacted, would proposed Foreign Investment (Protection and Promotion) Bill 2022 be valid and constitutional or not”.
