Islamabad: Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah urged Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial not to “push country into anarchy”, asking him to constitute full court bench of Supreme Court to hear case on delay of elections to Punjab Assembly. Speaking to reporters outside apex court, he said that bench, which originally comprised nine members had dwindled down to seven, then five and subsequently to four with yet another judge recently stepping down.
According to Rana Sana, departed judge was senior member of court and his dissenting note was unfortunate. Dissenting judge’s views were not considered when drafting ruling, said interior minister while referring to verdict of polls delay case. He added that development amounted to nothing less than national tragedy and would also be setback for lawyers’ bar associations. He went on to state that he had never before heard of Supreme Court decision being overruled by circular, and that Registrar’s role paled in comparison to that of court’s bench.
