A new case has been registered under the Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) against renowned singer Salman Ahmad.
The police allege that Ahmad has been involved in promoting anti-state propaganda and targeting the sanctity of state institutions. The case has been filed at the Defence-A police station. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the musician is accused of spreading false and malicious content on social media aimed at undermining state institutions. The post, which allegedly contained inflammatory material, was reportedly noticed by a police officer on duty. It is worth noting that Salman Ahmad was previously expelled from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, and his membership was revoked after he shared negative social media posts about the party’s leadership, particularly against former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The latest PECA case adds to the growing number of legal actions being taken against individuals accused of spreading harmful or misleading content on social media. Under PECA, individuals can face serious legal consequences for actions deemed to damage the reputation and stability of the state or its institutions. Salman Ahmad, known for his musical contributions, has not yet commented on the new developments regarding the case.
However, this legal action raises questions about the growing scrutiny of social media activity and its potential impact on freedom of expression in Pakistan.
