SA passes resolution urging Dr. Aafia’s repatriation

KARACHI: Sindh Assembly unanimously passed resolution urging federal government to secure release of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui from US detention. Presented by Jamaat-e-Islami member Muhammad Farooq, resolution called upon federal authorities to press for repatriation of Dr. Siddiqui, often referred to as “Sindh’s daughter.” During session, Sindh’s Education Minister Sardar Ali Shah confirmed federal efforts, acknowledging government’s formation of committee to address matter.
Assembly session was adjourned until following day. Last week, Additional Attorney General informed Islamabad High Court that government will send delegation to US for Aafia Siddiqui case. Delegation will include former and current parliamentarians, senators, retired or active military officials, doctors and Fauzia Siddiqui. Representative from Foreign Ministry informed court that Ministry has shared proposal for Prisoner Transfer Agreement with US. Earlier, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in letter requested US President Joe Biden to release Dr Aafia Siddiqui on humanitarian grounds.
