KARACHI: Abdul Wajid Shaikh, Registrar Cooperative Societies Sindh flouts the orders of Sindh High Court despite prohibition by the Court against Shahzad Tharani for illegally using his name as ‘chairman’ Karimabad Ismailia Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited (KIMCSL) ST2.

The Registrar also allowed unlawful holding of 9th Annual General Body meeting (AGM) on 28th December 2024 under his patronage while the members of society had already filed complaint against various criminal acts and offences committed by the Secretary and so called chairman of Society managing committee.

These criminal activities were very much in knowledge of the Registrar of Cooperative Societies, as controlling authority; appointed by Government of Sindh but he was not fulfilling his lawful duties.

Informed sources disclosed that copies of this complaint were also dispatched to Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah, his advisor on Cooperatives Ehsan Ur Rehman Mazari, and Director General SBCA. But they too did not bother to take immediate action against the office of Registrar and its corrupt officials.

Members of KIMCSL ST2 have been consistently expressing concerns and objections regarding Managing Committee's conduct with connivance of corrupt officials of Registrar Cooperative Societies Sindh. Committee's actions involving misuse of millions of rupees collected from Society Members not only undermine principles of transparency and fairness but also eroded trust and confidence among society members.

It may be mentioned here that the Cooperation department is responsible for ensuring that cooperative societies comply with relevant laws, rules, and regulations. It establishes and enforces regulatory frameworks to govern the operations of societies, including financial reporting, record-keeping, maintenance of statutory documents, and adherence to ethical standards. Through inspections and periodic assessments, the department monitors compliance and takes appropriate enforcement actions against non-compliant societies to maintain transparency, accountability, and the overall integrity of the cooperative sector.

In exceptional circumstances, such as persistent mismanagement or serious violations, the department has the authority to supersede the existing Managing Committee of a cooperative society. This measure allows for temporary intervention to restore order, rectify governance issues, and protect the interests of the society's members.

In instances where concerns or irregularities arise, the department is bound to conduct inquiries into the affairs of cooperative societies. These inquiries help uncover any potential misconduct, mismanagement, or violations of the law. Based on the findings, the department may take necessary special measures to rectify the situation and ensure compliance with regulations.
