Shah Mehmood Qureshi, senior leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former foreign minister, has been transferred to Adiala Jail, where he is set to face formal charges related to the May 9 attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ).
This case is part of the broader investigation into violent protests that erupted after PTI chairman Imran Khan’s arrest. On Sunday, the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) heard 13 of the 14 cases linked to the May 9 incident at Adiala Jail. Judge Amjad Ali Shah presided over the proceedings, and the court recorded the attendance of the accused. The hearings for these cases were adjourned until January 6, and one more case related to the GHQ attack will be heard later today. Additionally, the court has called for the cancellation of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s bail due to his repeated absence from court. Key political figures, including former Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad and former Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat, also attended the hearing. Qureshi’s legal team is preparing for the formal reading of charges, expected today.
Furthermore, hearings related to other May 9 cases, including charges of vandalism and violence, have been postponed until January 2024. Last week, the ATC in Rawalpindi issued non-bailable arrest warrants for 25 absentees, including prominent PTI leaders such as Gandapur, Shibli Faraz, and Rashid Hafeez. The GHQ attack case continues to draw significant attention as more PTI leaders face implications in the violence.
