Lahore: Day after Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) failed to give Supreme Court final date for upcoming general elections, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi urged caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar to ensure timely polls in country.

In letter to interim Prime Minister, Qureshi apprised Kakar that his party intended to challenge decision made by Council of Common Interests in court. "Time has come to put country on path of law and Constitution," he added

In his letter, PTI leader also felicitated Kakar for being appointed as caretaker Prime Minister and extended his party's cooperation to him in fulfilling "Great responsibility" assigned to him.

Lashing out at former government, Qureshi said, "Country is on verge of complete destruction of Constitution."

Previous government used intuitions to escape from accountability, adding that former rulers' behaviour caused massive damage to foundations of state. He accused former PDM government of using state intuitions to oust PTI from election arena.

"PTI Chairman is kept in Attock prison in very inhuman conditions," Qureshi said, adding that he was deprived of basic rights promised in Constitution and jail laws.

He apprised interim Prime Minister that over 10,000 workers of PTI were currently behind bars.

It is essential for credibility of polls that 'level playing field' should be provided to all political parties and candidates in upcoming general elections, Qureshi said.

PTI leader was of view that foundation of democracy is based on citizens' right to vote.
