President says delay in elections unacceptable in democracy

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi said yesterday delays in elections are not acceptable in democratic set-ups. President expressed his views while talking to private news channel. He said that he always had firm conviction that neither Pakistan would go into default nor it would derail from path of constitutionalism and democracy. Responding to various queries, President expressed his optimism that election in two provinces would be held and Supreme Court that had been seized of matter would make final decision. “I still expect, that democratic path will emerge from Supreme Court’s proceedings,” he added.
To question, he said in democratic countries, elections were not dependent upon availability of funds, census or security issues, quoted state news agency. “In democratic set ups, delays in elections are not acceptable,” he said and added that in his letter to Election Commission of Pakistan, he had quoted two former US presidents who held elections despite different challenging issues. He opined that election in Punjab province could not be postponed on basis of census and security situation as situation in country was better than in 2018.
