ISLAMABAD: President Arif Alvi has announced April 30 as date for general polls in Punjab, hours after Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) proposed dates for election in province as directed by Supreme Court (SC).
“President Dr. Arif Alvi has announced date of April 30, 2023 (Sunday) for holding general elections of Provincial Assembly of Punjab,” tweeted President’s office.
Dr Alvi’s office said that decision was made by President after “Considering dates proposed by Election Commission of Pakistan”. Earlier, ECP in letter to President Alvi recommended that polls for provincial assembly in Punjab be held between April 30 and May 7. Election Commission met third consecutive meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja in chair.
“Commission is ready to fulfil its constitutional and legal obligations after selection of date by president,” letter stated.
However, in letter to Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ghulam Ali, Commission said it was waiting for his response in light of SC order.
