ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi has directed State Life Insurance Corporation of Pakistan (SLICP) to pay death insurance claim worth Rs 300,000 to widow of deceased policyholder who was denied payment on ground that her husband’s death was not direct consequence of road accident but he was known patient of epilepsy.

He also upheld orders of Wafaqi Mohtasib directing SLICP to adopt proper procedure/rules/regulations which were violated by it resulting in maladministration. President gave this decision while rejecting representation filed by SLICP against decision of Wafaqi Mohtasib Akram Masih, late husband of Rehana Bibi (complainant), had obtained life insurance policy from SLICP for sum assured of Rs 300,000 for period of 20 years.

He died in road accident and after his death, his wife filed death insurance claim which was rejected by SLICP claiming that he fell down due to an epilepsy attack and his death was not direct consequence of the road accident as reflected in FIR and was known patient of epilepsy.

President Alvi pointed out that Confidential Report of Field Officer of SLICP depicted that said officer at time of issuance of policy had declared insured as healthy and categorically stated therein that he knew deceased policyholder since last two years, thus, plea of SLICP was hit by principle of estoppel.
