President Alvi seeks affordable housing for people

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi has urged need to adopt environment-friendly, energy-efficient and cost-effective construction and housing practices to provide quality accommodation for people.

Promoting vertical construction in country could help provide cost-effective and affordable housing to poor and lower middle class, besides overcoming shortage of space in urban areas, preventing unplanned growth of cities and saving agricultural land from encroachment, he added.

Addressing closing ceremony of 2nd Pakistan International Property Expo and Convention, organised by Pakistan Association of Exhibition Industry (PAEI) at Aiwan-e-Sadr he called for discouraging tendency to make unplanned housing schemes lacking basic civic amenities at all levels.

He called for promoting aesthetically pleasing construction in country, besides adopting green building practices, including promotion of solarisation and vegetation on unutilised roofs in urban areas.

President said that katchi abadis suffered from lack of civic amenities and were inhabitable, adding that inclusive and poor-friendly development should be promoted in country so that no one was left behind and fruits of development reached all segments of population.

Government policies should be targeted towards creating an economic system with help of private sector to ensure equitable distribution of precious national resources to underprivileged segments of population in underserved areas of country.

President also urged members of business community to take proactive and practical steps to increase representation and participation of women in different sectors of economy, particularly in housing and construction sector.

President appreciated management of PAEI for holding exhibitions, organising seminars and conferences in all parts of Pakistan, in region and around world to promote ‘Brand Pakistan’, benchmark best practices in different sectors, create joint ventures with world leaders in different sectors and promoting trade and investment in different fields.

Founder Chairman of PAEI Khurshid Barlas highlighted PAEI has been making efforts to promote ‘Brand Pakistan’, improve Pakistan’s image, enhance trade and investment in country.

He said that PAEI organised almost 500 different events, conferences, seminars and expos nationally, regionally and internationally to promote different sectors of Pakistan’s economy.

He also called for regulating construction sector of country, developing linkages and imparting training to people associated with construction and housing sector. Earlier, President distributed shields among representatives of companies in housing and construction sector for their exceptional performance.
