Karachi: Pakistan Peoples' Party opposed ECP decision, saying drawing new boundaries of constituencies is not "Constitutional requirement". Electoral authority has announced that new delimitations will be carried out across country on basis of new census approved by Council of Common Interest meeting last month, meaning general elections in country will be delayed beyond its 90 days constitutional requirement.
Reacting to ECP's announcement, PPP spokesperson Faisal Karim Kundi said party has been demanding elections to be held as per Constitution. "There is no constitutional requirement to do delimitations but there is constitutional requirement to hold elections within 90 days," he added.
PPP was key ally of Pakistan Democratic Movement-led government in Centre, which "Unanimously" approved new census earlier this month, requiring ECP to carry out fresh delimitations before holding polls.
As per schedule, the new delimitation of constituencies across country will be notified in December this year. As per Election Act, ECP said it is bound to draw new boundaries for hundreds of provincial and national assembly constituencies across country.
