Population increase in Karachi exposes flawed census method, claims PILDAT Chief

KARACHI: Head of Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT), Ahmad Bilal Mehboob raised concerns over recent 63 percent population increase in Karachi, suggesting that it highlights major flaws in census conducted in country.
Mehboob pointed out that various political parties had not given sufficient attention to census methodology. In Pakistan, census has been carried out using de jure method, which determines population based on usual place of residence, both in 2017 and 2023 census. Highlighting unprecedented extension of census for eighth time, he emphasised that with each extension, population count has risen significantly. Census plays crucial role in resource allocation and seat distribution in legislative assemblies.
