KARACHI: City administration in a crackdown against dairy farmers selling fresh milk on inflated price impounded their vehicles at different police stations. Dozens of vehicles supplying milk to vendors were detained and shifted to various police stations in city.
Negotiations between Dairy Farmers Association (DFA) and Commissioner Karachi ended in failure yesterday over fixing fresh milk price. Two sides failed to reach over decision as dairy farmers refused to set milk price at Rs 170 per litre proposed by city administration.
Fresh milk is being sold at Rs 180-200 per litre in city. Last official rate list for fresh milk was issued by administration in December 2021, setting price at Rs 120 per litre. Commissioner Karachi offered dairy farmers to hike official price to Rs 170 per litre. Farmers however claimed per litre production cost as Rs 200 per litre. Earlier dairy cattle farmers association threatened to increase prices after district administration carried out raids at multiple retailers in city.
