PM withdraws appointment of IRSA Chairman over Sindh’s concerns

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif withdrew appointment notification of Indus River System Authority (IRSA) Chairman.

PM Shehbaz has taken notice of Sindh government’s reservations over IRSA Chairman’s appointment. Earlier, Sharif appointed Zafar Mahmood, grade 22 officer, IRSA Chairman.

Irrigation Minister Jam Khan, PM Shehbaz Sharif and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah held telephonic discussion on matter after which premier decided to withdraw notification.

Sindh Chief Minister informed PM Shehbaz about reservations province had on IRSA Chairman’s appointment. He said federal government could not appoint officer.

IRSA, which regulates water distribution among four federating units Punjab, Sindh, KP and Balochistan has Chairman picked on rotation basis from four provincial members.

During tenure of caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar, Irsa Amendment Ordinance 2024 was passed and it empowers Prime Minister to appoint IRSA chairman from federal government.
