ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif constituted 13-member committee to work out transferring power distribution companies (DISCOs) to provinces.

Committee has been formed under chair of Defense Minister Khawaja Asif. Ministers for power, trade and petroleum and chief ministers of province will be members of committee.

Secretary Council of Common Interests, secretary power and secretary privatisation have also been included in 13-member committee. Terms of Reference (ToRs) have also been finalised for committee.

PM Shehbaz Sharif directed committee to put forward its recommendations within 10 days. It may be noted that last week, PM who chaired high-level meeting to discuss handing over of DISCOs to provinces directed said committee to finalise strategy without any delay. Meeting was told that transferring DISCOs to provinces was constitutional step that would help curb power theft considerably.

Reiterating his resolve to curb elements involved in power theft, premier said that federal government would also extend technical support to provinces for their capacity building.
