PM for using technology to improve tax, revenue collection

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to utilise modern technology to improve collection mechanism of taxes and revenues. Chairing review meeting on FBR reforms, he instructed measures for capacity building of FBR officers and its effective use, according to PM Office press release.

He directed formulation of strategy for restructuring Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited and called for enhancing effectiveness of systems to curb smuggling. He directed FBR to provide friendly atmosphere to taxpayers and asked officers to accomplish reform process. Earlier, Federal Board of Revenue has abolished Customs Intelligence department due to poor performance and alleged involvement in smuggling. FBR has restructured Customs Intelligence and Investigation division, limiting its role to monitoring only.

Additionally, authority to stop or release consignments has been withdrawn from Customs Intelligence officers. Notification has been issued by FBR Chairman under directives of Prime Minister, outlining reforms and new organisational structure.
