PESHAWAR: Peshawar High Court (PHC) sought written responses from Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Haji Ghulam Ali regarding date for general elections in province.
Two-member bench comprising Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim and Justice Syed Muhammad Attique Shah heard petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf seeking date for polls in KP Assembly.
PTI leaders Azam Swati, Asad Qaiser, Shibli Faraz and Shah Farman also appeared in court. PTI had submitted petition to court stating that elections must be held within 90 days after dissolution of assembly.
During hearing, court asked why governor has not yet given date for elections. At this, KP’s Advocate General said that Governor still has time to give date for elections as per Constitution, adding that Chief Secretary has submitted reply. To this, Justice Ali ordered Governor Ali to submit written reply by Thursday in response to letter sent to him by electoral body seeking date for polls. High Court then asked what will be future course of action if ECP does not get date today. PTI’s lawyer said that Governor is not giving date and is only making excuses. Court after issuing notices adjourned hearing till Thursday.
