ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has announced protest movement, starting from January 26, against government’s ‘anti-media’ policies.
According to statement, PFUJ has announced nationwide protest movement against imposition of death penalty provisions on head of news ARY NEWS Ammad Yousaf, ‘illegal notices’ to TV channels and registration of ‘bogus cases’ against journalists. Journalists’ body in statement said that demonstrations will be held at press clubs across Pakistan on January 26.
“On January 30, ‘Press Freedom Rally’ will be held from National Press Club to Parliament, which will turn into sit-in,” it stated. Statement said that sit-in in front of Parliament will continue until demands are accepted.
Before holding freedom of press rally, PFUJ delegations will also meet with all political and religious parties where they will be presented with charter of demand. Apart from this, on January 28, all press clubs and local unions will hold meeting and finalise preparations for ‘Press Freedom Rally’.
Earlier, Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) expressed concern over ‘serious charges’ imposed on ARY Senior Vice President Ammad Yousuf.
Electronic media editors and news directors’ body questioned why case was registered against media worker on statement issued by politician. “It is fascism to include life imprisonment or death sentence clause in case,” it added.
