ISLAMABAD: The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad has granted bail to former Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi in the case related to the vandalism of the Judicial Complex.
The bail application was presented before Judge Abul Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain of the ATC in Islamabad on Friday. Babar Awan and Sardar Abdul Razzaq represented Chaudhry Pervez Elahi as his legal counsels, while prosecutor Raja Navid appeared for the prosecution. During the hearing, the prosecutor informed the court that the records would be delayed. Judge Zulqarnain expressed dissatisfaction, stating that the proceedings had already begun, and the records should have been submitted. He urged the parties to start presenting their arguments.
Counsel Babar Awan requested the court to grant bail, emphasizing that Chaudhry Pervez Elahi was not named as a suspect in the case. He argued that Elahi had been apprehended solely based on suspicion. The prosecution opposed the bail request, citing that the FIR had been registered under non-bailable sections, and Pervaiz Elahi’s arrest was based on information provided by an informant.
Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain, while accepting the bail plea, noted that Chaudhry Pervez Elahi was not named in the FIR. The court ordered the submission of surety bonds worth Rs 20,000.
On September 8, the court had remanded Pervaiz Elahi to judicial custody for 14 days. The case of Judicial Complex vandalism was filed against him on March 18 at the Ramna police station.
