LAHORE: Special committee of Punjab Assembly, led by Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan approved amendments allowing lawmakers to address House in English, Punjabi, Saraiki, Potohari and Mewati in addition to Urdu.
This enhances accessibility for constituents who speak these languages, fostering more representative and responsive legislative body. Change reflects multilingual nature of province, enabling legislators to communicate and fully participate in legislative discussions effectively. Speaker stated that recognising and incorporating regional languages into official proceedings also demonstrates cultural respect and acknowledgment of linguistic heritage of Punjab, thereby strengthening connection between Assembly and people. Another significant approval by committee was grant of suo motu powers to standing committees of Punjab Assembly. Additionally, committee approved access to Assembly through public petitions. Speaker informed that this mechanism allows citizens to present their views on bills, pending matters, or issues of public interest directly to House.
He said that this encourages more inclusive and participatory democracy by giving citizens direct channel to influence government policy and legislative outcomes.
