ISLAMABAD: Joint session of Parliament adopted resolution, stressing for holding of general elections of National Assembly and provincial assemblies in country simultaneously to strengthen federation.
Two identical resolutions were moved by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Murtaza Javed Abbasi and Senator Kamran Murtaza aimed to promote political stability and foster unity among provinces. Resolutions called for organising general elections of all assemblies simultaneously across country. Resolutions emphasised significance of appointing neutral caretaker set-ups to ensure impartiality and fairness during elections.

Resolutions argued that holding separate elections in Punjab, largest federating unit with over 50 percent of the National Assembly seats, would inevitably impact outcome of general elections to National Assembly seats in Punjab. Therefore, it could potentially marginalise smaller provinces’ role in federation.

Lawmakers belonging to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf staged token walkout from House chanting, “Hold elections and save country”. Last week, three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial and comprising Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Ijazul Ahsan fixed May 14 as date for poll in province. On March 22, ECP delayed provincial assembly election in politically crucial Punjab province by more than five months, citing deteriorating security situation in cash-starved country, move criticised by PTI Chairman Imran Khan.
