Pakistan’s inflation hits all-time high of 47.23pc YoY

ISLAMABAD: Weekly inflation, measured by Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) witnessed an increase of 0.51 percent to jump to an all-time high of 47.23 percent year-on-year (YoY) for week ending on April 19. According to data released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), increase was mainly driven by soaring food prices, which caused 0.51 percent rise in short-term inflation on week-on-week basis.
During week under review, prices of 29 items increased, eight decreased and 14 remained stable. Out of 51 monitored items, average price of 29 items increased, 8 items decreased whereas 14 items registered no change during week.
During week under review, items whose prices increased most compared to previous year were cigarettes, wheat flour, tea Lipton, diesel, potatoes, bananas, eggs, petrol, rice, basmati broken (87.30pc), rice Irri-6/9 (83.52pc), pulse moong (68.94pc), bread and pulse mash.
PBS data noted decrease in prices of tomatoes and chilies powdered. Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures monthly inflation surged to 35.37 percent YoY in March.
