Karachi, Pakistan's largest city and economic hub, is heading towards an environmental crisis due to mismanagement, corruption, and government apathy.

Once adorned with gardens and trees, the city is now transforming into a concrete jungle. Recently, the owner of a well-known hotel on the Super Highway ordered the cutting down of hundreds of trees under the cover of darkness. No government agency took notice, no investigation was conducted, and no action was taken.

This incident is proof that the rule of law has collapsed in the city, and any influential person can manipulate the environment as they please. The unchecked deforestation in Karachi is not a new issue, but in recent years, it has escalated alarmingly. Old and dense trees lining the streets are disappearing one by one, replaced by cement, iron, and concrete.Government Inaction and Institutional NegligenceIt is shocking that despite this widespread deforestation, the government has taken no serious action, nor have the relevant departments fulfilled their responsibilities.

Although laws exist against tree cutting, their enforcement is nowhere to be seen. Whether it’s municipal institutions or the forestry department, all remain silent spectators. The question arises: if a common citizen cuts down a tree outside their home, they face legal consequences, yet when an influential person or business entity does the same, no one bats an eye. The police, municipal authorities, and other relevant agencies are consistently absent from the scene.Environmental Consequences and Rising TemperaturesKarachi is already grappling with environmental pollution and rising temperatures. Continuous deforestation has exacerbated this problem.  During summer, Karachi’s temperature reaches between 40 to 45 degrees Celsius, and experts warn that if greenery continues to disappear, this will increase further in the coming years.Trees not only reduce heat but also help control pollution. If they are wiped out, the toxic particles and smoke in the air will directly impact human health.

Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that if the mass destruction of trees continues in Karachi, its residents will face severe climate change effects and health crises.Neglected Infrastructure and Unmanaged Waste The environmental crisis in Karachi is not limited to deforestation; the city's overall infrastructure is also deteriorating. Piles of garbage are visible everywhere, the drainage system is in shambles, and under the pretext of gas infrastructure development, the entire city has been dug up and abandoned.Municipal institutions, which claim to improve public facilities, are practically nonexistent. Instead of providing basic amenities, these agencies are deeply involved in corruption, while government representatives are more focused on political showmanship.Rampant Corruption in Karachi’s SystemIt is a harsh reality that Karachi’s system runs on corruption. On one hand, billions of rupees are spent in the name of development projects, yet there is no visible improvement. On the other hand, despite the environmental destruction, no one is held accountable.Tree cutting has become a lucrative business. Powerful individuals or business groups cut down trees at will, replacing them with buildings and commercial establishments, while government institutions either remain complicit or passive observers.Where is the Government?

The question on everyone’s mind is: where is the government? Does no one care about the health and environmental sustainability of Karachi’s residents? Has any official or employee been dismissed from service? Has anyone been arrested for this crime? The answer is a resounding no.The judiciary is also overwhelmed with numerous cases, but bureaucracy, corruption, and political pressure obstruct justice. If an ordinary citizen is caught committing a minor offense, immediate action is taken. However, when it comes to influential individuals, the law turns a blind eye. What Can Be Done? Now, the real question is: what is the solution to this problem? First and foremost, the government must take this issue seriously and enforce strict laws.1. Strict Action Against Illegal Tree Cutting: Anyone responsible for cutting down trees should face hefty fines and legal action.2. Nationwide Tree Plantation Campaign: The government and the public should collaborate on a large-scale afforestation initiative.

3. Crackdown on Corrupt Officials: Corrupt individuals within municipal institutions and government departments should be dismissed from service.4. Judicial Intervention: The judiciary must take suo moto notice of such cases and ensure swift justice. ConclusionThe rampant deforestation in a megacity like Karachi, combined with government inaction and corruption, paints a grim picture. The city is already suffering from environmental pollution, waste mismanagement, and a lack of basic facilities.

If the mass felling of trees continues, the consequences will be even more dire.It is time for the public, media, and civil society to raise their voices and stand against this injustice. Karachi is our city, and we must protect it—otherwise, future generations will never forgive us. Email: [email protected]
