ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif yesterday reiterated Pakistan's commitment to enhancing its collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), aiming to harness the full potential of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

This collaboration is intended to benefit both the people of Pakistan and the global community. The remarks came during a courtesy meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi at the Prime Minister's House.

The two leaders discussed the peaceful applications of nuclear technology in various sectors, including cancer diagnosis and treatment, agriculture, food preservation, water management, and industry, according to the PM Office Media Wing.

The prime minister praised the IAEA's efforts in promoting nuclear energy as a vital solution to combat climate change and reaffirmed Pakistan's dedication to using nuclear technology for sustainable development.

Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that, as a founding member of the IAEA, Pakistan has maintained a productive partnership with the agency for several decades. He acknowledged the significant progress made in nuclear power generation, industrial development, healthcare, and agriculture with IAEA's support, all of which have contributed to the country's socio-economic growth.

In response, Grossi expressed appreciation for Pakistan's longstanding and constructive engagement with the IAEA. He assured that the organisation would continue to work with Pakistan in the same collaborative spirit. Meanwhile, PM earlier said that concerns over the International Monetary Fund (IMF) rejecting Pakistan's proposal to lower electricity prices have now been put to rest.

Speaking at a federal cabinet meeting, the prime minister said IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva indicated that the global lender is open to reviewing Pakistan's power tariff reduction plan if presented formally.

Shehbaz Sharif noted that during his visit to Dubai, he discussed economic and investment matters with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir also in attendance.
